My Newest Toy

Working in the lab today.  Making all kinds of nummy things.  Tim's sitting on the couch under a Halloween blanket, playing the 360 with a pup snuggled on either side.

Too cute.

Meanwhile, check out one of my groovy Halloween gifts.  It's a cooking scale.  My old one only weighed up to 500 grams.  But this one goes to 5 kilo.

That's right.  I'm living the good life now.

And dig this. That's my bagel bowl, filled with a kilo of flour. Or, if you'd rather, 1000 grams. Which makes 16 bagels.

Hot dog.

  1. You know, you hear a lot about kilos of white powdery substances in the news...

  2. Tom: Don't think the bagels would be as good with that stuff.

mshatch: Used a Simply Organic Garlic Herb topping and it's got a bit of everything in it. Nice stuff for bread.

Even got to use my new bread knife. Bagel chips here I come.

    Make anything nummy lately?

  3. Tim needs to come to the dark side and use a PS3 not that girlie machine, pet the dogs for me and have a good one.

  4. Wait...you get a (admittedly digital) scale and he gets a nook? Something's not right here...

  5. Bard: I know, it's a dream come true.

Lurker: Girlie machine. That's funny. You guys and your gaming systems.

Anthony: Check out my big pile of Halloween loot. So many fun cooking toys and a week home to play.

  6. Oh, ok. One of many makes all the difference. and kitchen stuff is awesome.

My wife buys stuff all the time from the cooking club and Pampered Chef all the time to use. the funny thing is, I cook 6 out of 7 days for the family, so they're more like gadgets for me. ;)

  7. Anthony: Kitchen stuff is fun. New toys and all that. Right now I'm writing a formula or, draft one of a pumpkin pie cheese cake thingy. Not sure how it will work, but it's sure fun to try.

Do you have a favorite thing to make? Cooking? Baking? I love both.

Never heard of the cooking club. Do you have a link?

  8. I do most of the cooking at my house, no where nearly close to what you do though! Nummy! : )

  9. Brutorz: Do you like to bake as well?

Today I also made a big pot of carcass broth with chicken bones. My goodness, the house smells nice.

    What did you make today?

  10. Cooking Club of America: http://www.cookingclub.com/

My mother has a pumpkin cheesecake recipe that she's used since the 1980s; the topping is similar to a pecan praline. ;)

I love to cook Mexican of all types...from homemade tortillas to rice to beans to guac to salsa to enchiladas etc.

Bakingwise, I love to make cakes.

  11. Anthony: Thanks for the link.

Love pecans. So good. Although I bought some from a co-worker back at the fabric shop. One of those help the school things. My gosh, the nuts were rancid. Icksville City.

Mexican, very cool. I don't know a lot but back when I lived on the east coast, we had a small Mexican Eatery and boy, was everything I tasted good. Husband and wife. But back then I was still a VegHead so I never tasted any of the meat dishes.

As for beans, any kind, I can eat them daily. Love beans and rice but with mine, I make a Hungarian sauce, that I learned from my Mamam (Grandma).

I wanted to get Tim the Kindle DX, but thought they were discontinuing it. I may have misunderstood that though, back when we were doing research for which eReader to get him.

  12. Well, I was referring to refried beans and Mexican rice... ;)

As to teh DX, still out there, but you have to search for it on the site. That is, amazon is not hot-linking to the DX but are instead pushing the Kindle Touch and Fire. I can do the smaller ones, but I'd prefer the bigger format for my gaming pdfs.

  13. Anthony: That's what I wanted for Tim as well, a bigger screen for his PDFs. The Nook is a little small for that but he can put the eReader on the side and that helps some.

Love, love, love refried beans. Sometimes I make my own. Also good. And then other times, I make a refried bean, cream cheese, cheese and hot pepper grilled sandwich. It's pretty darn good with a little hot peppers/sauce.

    Num, num, num.

Eating honey grahams as I sit here. If I'm not careful, I won't have any left for my crust.

  14. How very European of you! I had to buy one for the recipes my Italian friends have taught me. They weigh everything here, except for the "spoon" amounts, and then precision flies out the door.

  15. Daisey: I am Hungarian, but heritage aside ... for the type of lab work I do, weighing is the only way to experiment properly, as I move from draft to draft of each formula.

That being said, when it comes to leves (soup), or red sauce, I don't measure but instead, rely on instinct and experience.

Also, I find both US standard and metric to both have valuable uses. Tim keeps needling me to write a blog about them, but I haven't yet. Too busy working in the lab, you know.

Big hello to your kids from me. Hope your day is filled with yummy things and creative fun. Cheers.
